My brother got married on March 1st this year - I had my dress and shoes and knew I wanted to make earrings to match. I have previous form for this, and it was a fun process doing it again!

I took the belt from the dress into my studio and looked through my offcuts matching Formica to colours.

I chose 6 colours and glued them up with walnut.

A quick sketch of what I wanted and some black card templates ready to trace on the Formica. I had a good idea of what I wanted so this didn't take long.

Using the card templates to trace the shapes on the Formica.

Every shape is pierced out by hand with a piercing saw.

All the colours cut - I knew this would be too many colours but I needed to try them out and see them side by side to really visualise how they'd work together. I can't do this with the bigger sheets of laminate at the start!

I narrowed it down to three colours: red, green and light blue.

Sanding each shape by hand.

Soldering one of the silver components.

The silver is oxidised, the laminate and wood is smooth and all ready to be assembled.

The finished earrings held against the belt.

Wearing the earrings with my dress.

Me all dressed up!
